 Geelong Interfaith Network.

A statement about the proposed “same sex marriage” plebiscite.

Authorised at G.I.N. Meeting 1st August 2016.

The Geelong Inter Faith Network encourages those in the various “faith communities” to get to know each other, to appreciate each others' spiritual heritages, and to respect each others' beliefs and practices, not least when we find that there are profound differences.

From our experience we know that even within a particular faith community there may be a range of opinion about certain matters.

As our society approaches the proposed “Same Sex Marriage” Plebiscite we note that, concerning “people of faith”:

- Some would say that “marriage” can only be between a man and a woman.

- Others would say that what is called “Marriage Equality” would be acceptable, that is that any two consenting adults could be “married” in the terms of the current Marriage Act.

- Some believe that for members of their faith community, homosexual practice is unacceptable in all circumstances.

- Others believe that it is acceptable in the context of a stable, committed same-sex relationship.

- Some would be happy for same-sex partnerships to be recognised in law, but not to be called “marriages”.

However, all of us, in the G.I.N.,  would urge that “LGBTI” people in our society be treated with the dignity due to all human persons, and not marginalised, harassed, persecuted or discriminated against.

And in the debate which no doubt will take place about the plebiscite we would expect that various opinions will be aired, but we would advocate that all opinions be aired freely, in a civil manner, with no one side distorting or demonising the views of the other, and with each side respecting the other's right to express views.
