- Keeping you informed about Jewish communal activity

President's Message

The past four months have encompassed a broad range of issues involving media, security, communal hotspots, politicians' meetings and leading the affairs of the office and Executive. I have been interviewed regarding Purim addressed PACMAC - the Police and Multicultural Advisory Group and the “Kadimah” 100 years celebration; co-hosted Rabbi Samson and his team on Israel's Atid School System for Youth at Risk;  billeted Dr Willy Weisz, an Austrian academic who spoke to our plenum about the Jews of Vienna; and overseen our new member services - the Volunteer Resource Centre, What's Nu and Community Leadership Forum. We are forging a strong and effective team, comprising the Executive and the professional staff, which we hope will be consultative, supportive and responsive to member and community issues.

JCCV Plenum Report

A Presidential Affair

Professor Leon Mann, an expert in leadership and decision making, facilitated a highly successful leadership workshop for 30 community presidents on the 4th of March. JCCV designed the forum as a first in what is planned to be a series of forums to support and develop lay leadership and create strategic opportunities. The session focused on leadership strategy and effectiveness, influencing people, understanding resistance to change and working with key stakeholders. Professor Mann was outstanding and from all accounts, the participants felt the morning to be highly beneficial.

Women of the 3 Abrahamic Faiths

In true kinship, 50 women spent 3 days living-in, eating, drumming and singing at the annual Jewish Christian Muslim Association (JCMA) Women’s Conference. This year’s theme was “Peace” - an understandably confronting and challenging topic, yet the discussions were open and honest with perspectives shared from each of the Abrahamic faiths.

The JCCV, Victorian Council of Churches and Islamic Council of Victoria are the lead agencies for the JCMA and call on Jews, Chritians and Muslims to join their winter conference.

Sudanese Leadership in Melbourne

Email to Nina bassat AM:

Thank you for speaking to the Sudanese community leaders from Darfur and the Nuba Mountains. As you heard the situation for the Darfuri and Nuba Mountain communities in Sudan is dire and the men involved in Jewish Aid's leadership program struggle to run their communities in Australia whilst supporting their communities and families back home. Your presentation on leadership provided insight into their role and reinforced for them, that they are indeed doing a good job leading their Melbourne communities. You provided useful advice and practical tips and one of the men commented at the end of the meeting that it was time to take action. Hence, we will be developing an action plan at our next meeting.

Our Stories...

Meet Anne, the JCCV's newest and best volunteer. Anne Livnat, is a part of the JCCV family, someone upon whom we have come to depend and enjoy. Anne is updating our 15,000 strong donor database, a long and necessary task and once complete, will begin work on categorising our 10,000 emails to improve communications. Anne's background is fascinating, from her decisions as a single mum to retrain in IT in 1980 to support her family to her parents' escape from Poland via Russia and Australia during the 2nd world war...
