Monthly Reflections

Rendering: I come to pray, but sit in silence. I am listening for You to talk to me. You whisper,

"Come, let go of your heavy burdens. Raise up your weary arms, all the light and yearnings they hold, into my hands, rest your hunger and hurt. Believe all that you seek is not beyond hope. Trust it is not outside your being."

Miranda Claudius

It will take all of us to hospice this old culture as the new one is forming.

Monthly reflections are drawn from

Women, Spirituality and Transformative Leadership

available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, SkyLight Paths and WSF.

Book cover

We are constantly awed by stories of creative and compassionate work being done by women on behalf of a better world. Some are taking on big global issues and challenges; others are doing  remarkably effective grassroots work in a neighborhood or community.  All  of these diverse acts of service combine to create a beautiful web of 'motherwork' which is changing our world and modeling a new kind of leadership.

Each month we will feature one woman who is doing motherwork in the world - through the words of another woman who witnesses her sister's valuable contribution.

Who do you know that is doing  motherwork?

I honor the motherwork of Rita Nakashima Brock. Rita is a compassionate and creative thinker, a published author, a theological professor, a web-savvy administrator, a community activist.

While in these ways she nurtures and guides growth and cares llovingly for the human family, I am particularly interested the "motherwork" she is currently engaged in - the development of "Soul Repair Centers" for assisting veterans in dealing with a newly identified wound of war - moral injury. Moral injury emerges from a sense of personal agency and empathy and is defined by Veterans Administration clinicians as "perpetrating, failing to prevent, or bearing witness to acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations."

Rita is currently working to engage seminarians, clergy, congregations, interested community persons, and mental health professionals, along with veterans and their families in learning about moral injury. The Project will assist all participants to retrieve and adapt the wisdom found in the religious traditions of veterans themselves and to ground the healing of moral injury in long-term sustainable community life.

An active member of the Christian Church -- Disciples of Christ, Rita is committed to the importance of faith values in pursuing transformative leadership. Her commitment is a testimony to critical "motherwork" for the common good!

Global Call to Participate in 5 Minutes of Prayerful Silence   ~  Sunday - February 26

On the eve of the opening of the 56th Session of the UN-Commission on the Status of Women, women of all spiritual traditions are invited to join in prayer and silence for the good of the world's women and girls - wherever they are and at any time that day. Women of all spiritual traditions are invited to join in prayer and silence, to hold in their hearts the hopes of those who come to the CSW: for homes and a world without violence and fear, where there will be good food, air and water, education and medical care, for women's empowerment and gender equality, for consciousness, voice and choice, for circles with a sacred center to support the wisdom and courage of women in them, and for there to be a UN 5th World Conference on Women

Feel free to share this invitation with your communities and networks!

WSF Canada Launched on January 25

Women of Spirit and Faith Canada was launched on January 25 with a dynamic gathering in Vancouver, co-hosted by the Interspiritual Centre of Vancouver. More than 70 women representing many diverse regional organizations and networks came together for circle dialogues and a shared exploration of possibilities at the intersection of feminine spirituality and transformative leadership.

WSF Canada has launched a new website at www.wsfcanada.org and welcomes Canadian women to join them on their Facebook page 'Women of Spirit and Faith Canada.'

Watch for news of a second gathering to be held in Toronto later this spring!

Parliament of the World's Religions

Women of Spirit and Faith was born at the 2009 Parliament of the World's Religions in Melbourne, Australia, and so it is especially exciting to announce that one of our co-founders - Kathe Schaaf - has been recently elected to the Board of Trustees of the Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions (CPWR).

The Council for a Parliament of the World's Religions was created to cultivate harmony among the world's religious and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its guiding institutions in order to achieve a just, peaceful and sustainable world.  The next Parliament is being planned for 2014 in Brussels, Belgium and WSF plans an active campaign to engage women from around the world to bring their wisdom and leadership to that Parliament.
